Sheet Design to Improve CYAN Capacity


CYAN Ideation - Sheet Design We are looking for a way to form calcium hydroxide (or magnesium hydroxide) into easily-made sheets. The idea is that this would allow us to extend the current single-layer CYAN design to one with multiple layers that can capture even more CO2. Humid CO2-filled air will be passed parallel to the sheets. Then the sheets will be weighed before and after to calculate the weight change, which is relatable to the amount of CO2 taken up.

The calcium hydroxide will yield calcium carbonate upon absorbing CO2. Note that calcium carbonate is a solid that will not dissolve in water. This property could be used to separate out the calcium carbonate. Calcium hydroxide is slightly soluble in water.

Requirements:

    1) The sheets must be as thin and stiff as possible without being brittle and thus easy to break. Sheets that are no more than 0.5 mm are ideal.

    2) The sheets must not come apart when exposed to humid air.

    3) It must be easy to separate the resulting calcium carbonate from the sheet. This can be done by making any adhesive dissolvable in water or another easily available solvent, or the sheet might be entirely made from calcium hydroxide + binder.

    4) Once the calcium carbonate is removed, the sheet material must either be recyclable, compostable, or otherwise reusable in the process of making more sheets.

    5) The embodied carbon of the sheets should be as low as possible.
    In general, metals, cement, and other materials that require high temperatures for manufacturing will be high embodied carbon sources.
Current Ideas:
    1) Use a binder to make a thin film of calcium hydroxide.

    2) Adhere calcium hydroxide to a backing board of some material.

    3) Use a thin film of calcium hydroxide to form a sheet.
